Tips And Tricks To Help You Create The Perfect Bedroom For Your Child

Anyone who is a parent knows firsthand how hard it can be to keep up with a childs ever-changing mind. Its hard to know from one day to the next what they will like. What they wanted yesterday may not be what they want today. From food to clothes to the next craze in cartoon characters, you can’t help but go a tad bit crazy trying to keep up! To help with the never ending battle of little minds I have created a plan to make your life a little easier. Here are a few of my favorite tips and tricks to help you create the perfect Bedroom for your child.

The Plan

I never go into a project without sitting down and a creating a plan first. Get yourself a piece of paper and decide what kind of room does your child want. Who are they What are their likes and dislikes. I know that it is easy for us moms to decide that filly things and glitter would look amazing, but would your child really like it? Would that be a space that they truly would like to spend their time in? Sit down with your child and ask them what they would like to have in their room. Make it personable. If they like the color orange, then find a way to incorporate it in the room. How about a space to read or do crafts, You will be surprised to find out what kids actually would want if they could create the bedroom of their dreams.

By asking their input, it makes them feel like it is their space. Not one that mom created. Once you have devised a plan that you both can agree upon, it will make the whole project go a little more smoothly. Use this as a reference and stick to it. That tiny piece of paper will make things move along quicker and help you stick to your budget.

Remember what it is like to be a kid. Try to get down on their level and think like they would. All kids artchildren love to create, so having a space where they can draw, read or build things is essential in any childs room. Even if it is in a tiny corner of the room, having this space will bring hours of entertainment for your child.

A clean slate

The first thing I suggest is to clean everything out of the room. You want a clean slate. Not only is it a pain in the behind to have to work around objects, it prevents disasters like spilled paint from happening. Once everything is out of the room you can see if their are any repairs that need to be done before you begin.

Make sure that you have all your supplies and safety gear in the room with you. There is nothing more time-consuming or frustrating when you are running around looking for paint brushes or that roll of tape you left on the kitchen counter.

I also suggest Taping off all windows and doors and laying plastic out on the floor before you begin any painting project, I promise you this will save you a lot of headaches in the end. I know firsthand what kind of catastrophic damage a four-year old can cause when they knock over a can of Princess pink paint on off-white carpet. ( Bad choice for carpet in a kids room, I know!)

Stick to the basics

Lets face it, kids change their minds from minute to minute. One day it Mickey Mouse, the next day it is Captain American and all his super hero friends. If you are having to change bedroom themes all the time to keep up with a childs way of thinking, it will make you absolutely crazy!

One of the best pieces of advice I can give you when creating the perfect bedroom for your child is to stick to the basics. Don’t run out and buy a new comforter with the latest Disney character on it, because before you know it your perfect little angel child is gonna change his/her room

Try to stick with solid basic colors. I know this sound boring but adding throw pillows with the latest characters they are into or hanging pictures up with todays rave or cute Kids Removable Wall Decals""” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener” data-wplink-url-error=”true”>kids removable wall decals with save you a ton of money in the end. It is so much more cost effective and much easier to stay with the ever-changing flow of creatures and damsels that Disney throws at us on a monthly basis.

Think Long Term

The furniture you choose to put in your childs room needs to be somewhat versatile. By this I mean it needs to grow with your child. If you are out buying your first crib, I suggest choosing one that will change with your growing child. Beds they transition from crib to toddler to twin beds are where you will get the best bang for your buck. For an older child, buying a bed with storage and shelving, like the South Shore Logik Kids Pure White Twin Wood Mates Storage Bed 4 Piece Bedroom Set, will help keep clutter down and easily changes with your childs age and interests.

The princess castles and pirate ship beds are adorable we all can agree with that. However, when you spend a small fortune on cuteness versus practicality for a growing child, you can’t really justify the cost. They tend to outgrow the cuteness before the price tag wears off!

Use the resources available. Pinterest has a million ideas to help with ideas when creating the perfect childs bedroom.Make sure to shop around to get the best bargains. There are a ton of places to shop to get just the right pieces. My personal favorite place to find everything I need to create a perfect landing pad for the little one, is Amazon. The prices are so reasonable and they have a ton of options to fit everyones needs. From furnishings to beautiful bedding and wall decor, Amazon is my place for one stop shopping!

Final Thoughts

Dont let the task of creating the perfect room for your child become a chore. Try to have fun with your child and enjoy the experience! Use this as a time to get to know how they think. (you may be surprised). Find out who they are and what they like and incorporate that into a space you both will love. Just remember to keep it simple and stick to the basics. You both will love the end result.

Happy Decorating,

  1. I totally agree about sticking to the basics since a child can go from one like to another. I would stick to thinking about the furniture for sure. I have a question regarding colour… what is the suggested amount of colour for the room? I.e. Could I go 5 colours or is this a bit much. Is there an ideal amount of colour?

    1. Hi Rina,

      Thanks for the comment.

I wouldnt say there is an ideal amount of color per say but When you add to much color it will tend to take away from the other pieces in the room and make things a little to busy. My suggestion for almost any room in the house is to keep three walls the same color and opt for a darker shade on the fourth wall. I tend to accent the wall that you first see upon entering the room.

A good rule of thumb when choosing your colors is to go two or three shades darker than the three wall color  so it doesnt separate the room but instead blends the room nicely.
